Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Spanish phonemes /p, t, k, b, d, g/ are produced by Koreans and what is the difference compared to Spanish native group. After recording allophones produced by Korean university students, it uses a speech analysis program Praat to analyze the closure duration, release burst duration, rate of sonorization, and rate of approximantization. According to the results of this study, when native Koreans who are learning Spanish language (hereinafter, ‘KS learners’) pronounce the Spanish [p, t, k], ‘weak aspiration’ and ‘strong fortisation’ phenomenon can occur. As Korean language has its own fortis, Korean participants tend to pronounce the tense sounds of the Spanish language strongly. The pronunciation of voiced and voiceless plosives by native Spanish speakers is faithful to the voiced-voiceless distinction. However, the Koreans are relatively less faithful to the voiced-voiceless distinction due to the influence of their mother language. In addition, they have difficulty acquiring approximants [β, ð, ɣ] that do not exist in the Korean language. As argued by Flege (1995), the L2-approximants that do not exist in the Korean language are assimilated to the phonetic category of L1 due to phonetical closeness. Lastly, linguistic variables that have significant influence on the learning of Spanish language by KS leaners are: total learning period, stay experience in Spanish-speaking countries, and period of stay. This article conducts an analysis of acoustic-phonetic characteristics of KS leaners, an uncharted field of study. The results of this study can be utilized as basic data for future studies on the production of Spanish language.
