엔리케 두셀은 신화로서의 근대성은 세계적 지평에서 피착취 희생자 ―아메리카 인디오와 같은 주변부 세계의 사람들― 를 제물로 바치며 이들의 희생을 근대화에 수반되는 불가피한 비용이라는 논리 하에 은폐하였기에 이러한 비합리적인 신화는 해방 행위를 통해 극복되어야 한다고 주장한다. 이에 본 논문은 호르헤 루이스 보르헤스(Jorge Luis Borges, 1899-1986)가 사막 침공 작전이라는 구체적인 역사적 사실에 바탕을 두어 「남부 El sur」(1956)에서 인디오와 가우초의 후손들이 유럽계 후손에게 그들 조상의 빚을 갚게 하는 구조 즉, 아르헨티나 근대역사 중 사막 침공 작전에서 일어났던 일의 반대 상황을 설정함으로써 역사 다시쓰기를 시도하였음을 소개한다. 이로써 본 논문은 보르헤스가 「남부」를 통하여 자국의 근대화 과정에서 행해졌던 만행을 탈근대적인 시각에서 비판했음을 입증한다. 또한 본 논문은 보르헤스의 역사다시쓰기 시도를 근대성이 설정한 신화를 타파해 보는 두셀의 탈식민주의적 해방기획과 연결시켜 연구하며, 이에 덧붙여 이러한 역사 다시쓰기에 환상문학이 적합한 이유 또한 분석한다.
Abstract
Enrique Dussel insists that Modernity hides the fact that they sacrificed the pheriphery as a cost for the modernization of the center and thus, the goal of his Postcolonialist Liberation Practice is to liberate this Otherness which was denied by the Modernity. In this present work, I will present to the Korean readers an interpretation of a rewriting of the Argentinean Modern history in Jorge Luis Borges’ “El sur” and then I will connect this rewriting to Dussel’s Postcolonialist Liberation Practice. It will also discuss the usefullness of the Fantastic literary techniques for the Postcolonialist Liberation Practice because it makes possible the invasion of the unreal to the stable reality and because it presents two different ways of interpreting the story. The analysis of this short story will also prove that Borges came out of his ivory tower and showed his strong criticism on Argentinean social and political Modernity.
