Abstract
This article analyzes a short story called “The South” with the aim of proving that Jorge Luis Borges, its author, is not a transcendental and universal writer, but a writer who has an inseparable relationship with Argentina’s reality. The reason for choosing this short story is that Borges' individual life and literary itinerary are not only deeply integrated in the text, but it also provides a variety of complex interpretations regarding Argentina’s history, politics, geographic imagination and intellectual history. This article is composed of three parts. Chapter II deals with how Borges' life and literary antecedents are projected into “The South”; Chapter III traces mainly the relationship between this short story and Peronism; and Chapter IV analyzes what the South, as a frontier, means to the Argentina’s history and to this work. The most important context of “The South” is Borges' anger and despair against Peronism. These emotions were so intense that at the time, Borges even changed his perspective on Domingo F. Sarmiento and Juan Manuel de Rosas. In “The South”, Juan Dahlmann, the main character, is engaged in a duel even though he knows that he is unable to win. This implies the defeat of civilization against barbarism. This short story has the appeal of extending the mythical embodiments of the outskirts or southern regions of Buenos Aires to the southern frontier areas, but traveling to the past, a key device for mythicizing, only serves to confirm the presence of barbarism in the frontier region in the 19th century.
