초록
Abstract
The object interpreted as experiencer of some Spanish psych predicates is considered to choose the dative case or the accusative case according to subject animacy(e.g., A la niña le están molestando los ruidos/A la niña la estáis molestando). I argue that the categorizing v head of different flavors can alternate on the root of the verbs, giving rise to two different types of constructions despite their apparent similarities. The constructions with the accusative object consist of typical bivalent predicates in which the subject is agent and the object is theme/patient, as the inherent features on v require that the subject should be animate. Meanwhile, the dative object in the other type of constructions exhibits the authentic experiencer role and is licensed by the high applicative head above the verb with only an internal theme argument. I also offer an additional explication about the assignment of the nominative case to this sole verbal argument, assuming that case is assigned in a post-syntactic stage in the course of derivation.
