Abstract
The lexical approach to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language has received much interest in recent years as an alternative to grammar- based approaches. The lexical approach emphasizes on developing learners' proficiency with lexis, or words and word combinations. It claims that the vital part of language communication is the ability to comprehend and produce lexical phrases as wholes, or "chunks". In addition, the Cognitive approach to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language is also gaining its momentum. This paper mainly provides an overview of the cognitive methodological foundations underlying the lexical approach and the pedagogical implications suggested by them.
