Abstract
This study examines the effect of CEO pay slice(CPS) on manager’s accounting discretion in recognizing the goodwill impairment losses in Korea. In this study, CPS measurement is used as the proxy of CEO Power or managerial centrality. I measure CPS by the methods of Bebchuk et al.(2011), Young min, Kwak and Hyun Jin, Kim(2017). The samples of this study are selected from listed corporate, consist of 1,286 firm-years during 2013-2018. The main findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, I find a negative and significant relationship between CPS and goodwill impairment losses. This result suggests that a corporate which has a higher CPS does not tend to recognize the goodwill impairment losses regardless of the goodwill impairment symptom. Managers use the goodwill impairment losses for their opportunistic motives rather than appropriate accounting considered of the firm’s economic situation. Second, the goodwill impairment losses is used as tool of big-bath and income smoothing, but a corporate which has a higher CPS does not recognize the goodwill impairment losses and tends to increase the operating income with or without income management possibility.
