학교 문법의 급진적 규범주의에 대한 인식과 개선 방안

학교 문법은 규칙성이 정상적이고 불규칙성은 비정상적이라는 잘못된 인식의 영향을 깊이 받아 왔다. 이 논문은 이와 같은 종류의 문법적 편견을 급진적 규범주의라 부르고 이러한 과도한 문법적 규범이 인식되고 개선되어야 한다는 것을 주장한다. 예를 들어 학교 교과서에서는 ‘바래’가 일반적인 한국어 화자에게 훨씬 더 자연스럽게 들림에도 불구하고, 단순히 ‘바라다’라는 기본형의 규칙적 활용형이 아니라는 것만을 근거로 ‘바래’를 사용하지 말라고 가르친다. 이 표준형에 관련된 문제는 언어학과 인지 과학 분야에서 일어나고 있는 패러다임 변동과 결부되어 있다. 촘스키를 따르는 형식주의적인 접근에서는 언어가 상징과 문법 규칙의 조합이라고 본다. 이것은 왜 형식주의적인 접근이 문법의 규칙성을 형식화하는 데만 초점을 맞추고 불규칙적인 것과 학습의 역할은 간과하는지를 잘 설명해준다. 언어습득에 대한 연결주의적인 접근에서는 입력의 빈도에 따라 결합의 강도가 변하는 것으로 본다. 이 관점에서는 사용 빈도가 높아지면 불규칙적인 형태도 표준적인 것이 될 수 있다는 점이 설명된다. 이 연구에서는 급진적 규범주의가 기술주의와 충돌하는 세 가지 사례들을 살펴보고, 인지언어학과 연결주의적 관점이 어떻게 자연스러운 불규칙성을 규범주의의 편견으로부터 구해낼 수 있는지에 대한 논의가 펼쳐진다.
Abstract
Korean school grammar has been deeply influenced by a widespread misconception that regularity represents normality and irregularity represents abnormality. This paper designates this kind of grammatical bias as a radical prescriptivism and argues that excesseive grammatical norms should be identified and remedied. For an instance, school grammar textbooks generally takes the view that 'parae' should not be used simply on the grounds that it is not a regular conjugated form of the basic form 'parada', despite that 'parae' sounds far more natural than regular form 'para' to average native speakers. This issue about standard language is engaged with the paradigm shifts in the fields of linguistics and cognitive science. The formal approaches to linguistics following Chomsky's Generative Grammar framework envision language representation as an assembly of symbols and a grammar of rules that operates on them. That explains why this approach focuses on formalization of grammatical rules while de-emphasizing the irregularity of language and the role of learning. In connectionist approach to language acquisition, where connection between nodes are called 'connection strength', the strength of associations changes with the frequency of input. Therefore, it is not problematic that an irregular form becomes a norm with the increasing frequency of its use. This paper examines three cases, where radical prescriptivism comes into conflict with descriptivism, and discusses how Cognitive Linguistics and Connectionsism can redeem the natural irregularity from the radical byas of prescriptism.
