Abstract
This study analyzes the effectiveness of a practice-based digital competence training course for preservice early childhood teachers. The purpose of the study was to examine whether there were statistically significant changes in participants’ perceptions of the importance of digital competence and their self-assessed levels of digital competence before and after the education. A total of 56 students majoring in early childhood education at a university in central South Korea participated in an 8-week program consisting of 14 digital learning sessions. Pre- and post-tests were administered, and the data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, based on normality test results. The findings indicate that while the participants’ perceptions of the importance of digital competence remained consistently high, most items showed no statistically significant change. In contrast, their self-assessed levels of digital competence significantly improved in all areas, with effect sizes ranging from medium to very large. These results suggest that practice-based digital education can be effective in strengthening early childhood teachers’ digital competence and highlight the need to incorporate such training as a core component of the teacher preparation curriculum. Further research is needed to generalize the findings and investigate the long-term effects of digital competence in real educational settings.
