이 논문은 문화연구의 방법론으로서 ‘젠더번역’을 제안하고 그 이론적 방법론적 윤곽을 그려보는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 그 작업을 위해 먼저 ‘번역’을 원본에 의존하는 부차적인 것으로 보는 경향들이 비판되며, 발터 벤야민, 자크데리다, 호미 바바, 로버트 영의 문화/번역 이론들이 검토된다. ‘문화번역’의맥락에서 그들의 진전된 논의에도 불구하고, 젠더의 문제틀은 일관성 있게 생략되어 있다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 이 논문에서는 먼저 번역과 젠더를연결하는 두 가지 방식인 ‘번역의 젠더화’와 ‘젠더화된 번역’을 살펴본다. 그결과 ‘번역의 젠더화’는 그 역사적 현상을 비판하는 데 머물고 있으며, ‘젠더화된 번역’은 고려중인 텍스트들에 나타나는 젠더화된 정체성의 양상들을 언급하는 것으로 끝난다. 이러한 한계들은 ‘젠더번역’과 같은 새로운 개념을 창안하도록 우리를 자극한다. 이 개념은 젠더라는 인식소를 번역에 집요하게 개입시킴으로써 ‘젠더’와 ‘번역’을 동시에 비판적으로 재구축하는 이론적 방법론적지평을 우리에게 제시한다. 가야트리 스피박의 벵골 소설 「젖어미」 읽기는 문화번역이라는 전복적 행위를 젠더라는 중단 없는 인식소와 결합함으로써 ‘젠더번역’의 윤곽을 예시한다.
Abstract
This paper aims at exploring the theoretical terrains of ‘gendertranslation’ as a research methodology for cultural studies. To do that, first, I criticize the tendencies of ignoring ‘translation’ as something secondary to and dependent on the original text and examine the cultural/translation theories of Walter Benjamin, Jacques Derrida, Homi Bhabha, and Robert Young. In spite of their developed discussions in the context of ‘cultural translation’, the problematics of gender is consistently omitted. There have been two ways of connecting translation and gender: ‘gendering translation’ and ‘gendered translation’. The former tends to criticizing the historical phenomenon of ‘gendering translation’ while the latter merely mentions the aspects of ‘gendered translation’ in the texts concerned. Those limitations incite us to invent a new concept, such as ‘gender-translation.’ It attempts to intervene the translation persistently through the epistemological and methodological frame of gender, and critically reconstructs both gender and translation at the same time. As Gayatri Spivak’s translation of a Bengalese short novel “Breast-Giver” prefigures, ‘gender-translation’ is to combine the insurgent activity of cultural translation with the incessant episteme of gender.
