Abstract
This study explores the issues surrounding the implementation of AI digital textbooks from the perspective of parents. A total of 19 parents participated in the study through two rounds of focus group interviews, and the collected qualitative data were analyzed using a thematic analysis. The results revealed themes in three domains: instruction and assessment, students, and teachers. In the domain of instruction and assessment, parental perceptions included issues such as ‘personalized learning within school vs. the contradiction between tailored instruction and standardized testing’, ‘engaging lessons using diverse materials vs. reduced attention in digital-based classes’ and ‘increased learning efficiency through data accumulation vs. concerns about students’ sensitive personal data’. In the student domain, perceptions included ‘enhancement of AI and digital literacy vs. concerns over digital overdependence’ and ‘digital native generation vs. concerns about physical health’. In the teacher domain, perceptions included ‘reduction of instructional burden vs. diminished teacher roles and authority’ and ‘improved teacher understanding of students vs. increasing gaps in instructional quality among teachers’. Based on these findings, the study discusses the need of implementing growth-centered assessment systems that aligned with the features of AI digital textbooks, the development of proactive educational policies to safeguard students’ mental and physical well-being, and design of AI textbook policies that prioritize the role of teachers.
