Abstract
· Research method: This study compares Kim Young-ha’s I Have the Right to Destroy Myself and Wang Xiaobo’s Thirty Years Old, examining how death narratives function as a medium for subject formation and the exploration of emancipatory possibilities. · Research results: Amid the structural crises of post-capitalist South Korea and China’s socialist transition in the 1990s, literature came to represent death not merely as an end, but as a moment for reconfiguring existence. This orientation is closely tied to the existential concerns widely shared in contemporary East Asian literature. · Contribution points and expected effects: Whereas earlier research has largely remained confined to discussions of suicide or systemic critique, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the two texts, identifying death as a narrative strategy for subject formation and exploring how the intersection of death and sexuality opens possibilities for emancipation. In particular, the repetitive imagination and aesthetic design in I Have the Right to Destroy Myself and the sensory satire and subversive imagination in Thirty Years Old narrativize death at the levels of both landscape and imagination, thereby exposing the processes of subject dissolution and reconstruction. · Research topics: The analysis is grounded in a text-centered comparative literary approach and informed by multiple theoretical frameworks: Lacan’s concept of the Real, Heidegger’s notion of Being-toward-death, Bataille’s theory of eroticism, and Agamben’s biopolitical theory. Through these perspectives, the study explores the relationship between death and subject formation in narrative. · Research background: Kim Young-ha presents suicide as an act of aesthetic self-completion and existential decision, while Wang Xiaobo portrays death as a strategy of play and subversion. Both works narrativize death through the dual dimensions of visual landscapes and inner imagination, employing sexuality as a mediating device for subject dissolution and reconstitution. Consequently, death functions not as a mere termination of life but as a literary device that restores suppressed sensibility and autonomy, opening up new possibilities for existential self-projection. · Differences from prior research: By clarifying the narrative strategies of subject formation mediated through death, this study demonstrates that the intersection of death and sexuality constitutes a crucial terrain for understanding the existential problematic of contemporary East Asian literature. It thereby sheds new light on the shared survival conditions and crises of subjectivity in Korean and Chinese literature, contributing to the exploration of death as a locus of literary emancipation.
