Abstract

This study conducts a comparative analysis of Kim Young-ha’s Empire of Light and Wang Xiaobo’s Love in the Revolutionary Era, examining how the perception and practice of freedom are narrativized in contemporary Korean and Chinese fiction. Although the two works were produced within different historical contexts, both refrain from presenting freedom as a fixed right or a stable state. Instead, under systems of discipline and surveillance, freedom is represented through the incomplete forms of performance, disguise, and escape. In this sense, freedom is not an act of voluntary choice but a contingent effect generated within institutional and systemic structures of oppression, emerging only precariously amid conditions of restriction and deprivation.Through textual analysis of the two novels, this study reveals that the narratives of performance and escape fail to subvert the established order fundamentally, instead capturing freedom only at the level of fissure and margin. By doing so, it redefines the form of freedom articulated in contemporary Korean and Chinese literature not as a slogan or declaration, but as an existential task that must be continuously re-thought within oppressive realities.
