Abstract
· Research topics: This study investigates the perceptions of performing arts professionals regarding artistic convergence to inform the implementation, applicability, and development of arts integration education. · Research background: The necessity of convergence within the arts field has been widely acknowledged in response to evolving societal demands. This recognition has led to various policies and initiatives. However, there is limited empirical research on how practicing artists perceive and implement convergence. · Differences from prior research: Previous researches have primarily focused on the content, form, and outcomes of artistic convergence, as well as its pedagogical approaches. This study, in contrast, centers on the perspectives of practicing performing arts professionals, exploring their understanding, methods, challenges, and solutions regarding convergence. · Research method: A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews with ten performing arts professionals specializing in music and theater at University A. · Research results: The study revealed that performing arts professionals sought convergence to achieve creative expression, enhance audience engagement, and dissolve disciplinary boundaries. Their understanding encompassed diverse perspectives, including convergentism and reductionism. Approaches to convergence included utilizing other disciplines while maintaining a primary artistic focus, as well as pursuing multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary integration. To address the challenges, participants emphasized the importance of natural, high-quality convergence, enhanced interdisciplinary understanding and communication, and increased support for authentic artistic practices. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study provides practical strategies for promoting artistic convergence in educational settings, ensuring both artistic excellence and social relevance. The findings are expected to contribute significantly to the development of effective policies in this field.
