Abstract

● Research topics: This study investigated the influence of gratitude disposition on college adjustment among students majoring in health, welfare, and counseling. Specifically, it examined the sequential mediating roles of perceived social support and grit ● Background: College adjustment is a critical factor influencing students’ academic achievement, psychological well-being, and social relationships. Students in health, welfare, and counseling majors often face heavy academic demands, field training, and emotional stress, which can hinder their adjustment. Therefore, exploring psycho-social factors that enhance their adaptation is essential. ● Difference from Previous Studies: While prior research has mainly focused on general college students and examined simple mediation models, this study integrated three key variables—gratitude disposition, social support, and grit—into a sequential mediation model. Furthermore, grit was analyzed by separating its sub-dimensions (perseverance of effort and consistency of interest), providing a more nuanced understanding of its role. ● Research Method: Survey data were collected from 202 students majoring in health, welfare, and counseling at a four-year university in Korea. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and PROCESS Macro (Model 6) to test the sequential mediation effects, with bootstrapping (5,000 samples) applied to verify statistical significance. ● Results: Gratitude disposition positively predicted college adjustment both directly and indirectly through perceived social support. The mediating pathway from gratitude to college adjustment via social support and perseverance of effort (grit) was significant, whereas the pathway through consistency of interest (grit) was not. ● Contribution and Expected Effects: This study demonstrates that gratitude disposition, when combined with social support and perseverance, plays a critical role in promoting successful college adjustment. These findings provide practical implications for counseling and educational interventions, suggesting that gratitude-enhancement programs, supportive relational networks, and perseverance-focused training can effectively support students in health, welfare, and counseling majors.
