Abstract
This article analyzes the policy implications of expanding local women’s history by focusing on the archiving of oral life histories of women in Jeonbuk. The sutdy employs interviews with project stakeholders and analysis of 14 publicly oral history records. The findings reveal that the oral histories of local women present a critical narrative challenging the gender and social justice dimensions of mainstream history, which has been centered on male elites. Second, local women embody the plurality and diversity of subjects producing historical knowledge. Notably, knowledge produced through oral history is constituted by affective forms of knowledge, including tears and empathy. Third, the oral history process is a space for the practice of feminist pedagogy, where principles of relationality and respect are applied. Archiving oral history records can be conceptualised not as project deliverables or proprietary knowledge, but as a form of feminist politics concerning public memory. This study discusses the potential for expansion and the limitations of archiving local women’s oral life histories. Led by local women’s policy institutions since the 2010s, this feminist public policy domain is grounded in gender, social justice, inclusivity, and locality.
