Abstract

This article has two main purposes. Firstly, it examines from the comparative perspective of anthropology placenta cultures around the world, a wide range of cultural discourses and practices dealing with the human placenta. Secondly, based on this comparative analysis, it attempts to establish an intellectual jumping-board for further studies of the royal placenta rituals and placenta burial sites of the Joseon Dynasty by interpreting their deep and polysemic implications. To do this, this article analyzes a great variety of placenta dealing cultures around the world from the archaic time to the modern era. With this comparative analysis, it demonstrates that the human placenta is not a mere by-product of biological reproduction, but has multi-layered symbolic, social, politico-economic, and even cosmological significances. That is to say, the human placenta symbolically represents and reproduces the cultural value, social relation, and cosmology of a certain cultural group; exerts a significant magical power as an object of religious worship; and has complex sociocultural and political implications as a symbolic link between the human, the nature and the cosmos. As a conclusion, it suggests some possible research questions for deeper and more holistic approaches to the royal placenta rituals and placenta burial sites of the Joseon Dynasty.
