Abstract

This study analyzes the perception of utopia among the subjugated classes as expressed in the folktales about Choe Je-u, the founder of Donghak, during the late Joseon Dynasty. The late Joseon period was marked by severe social turmoil caused by internal corruption and exploitation by the ruling class, as well as external invasions. In this context, the subjugated people developed a longing for utopia as a means to overcome the hardships of reality, and this desire was vividly embodied through the collective imagination of folktales. Focusing on eight Choe Je-u folktales included in the Hanguk Gubi Munhak Dae-gye, this paper examines their narrative structures and types, the gap between historical facts and folktale representations, and the meaning of utopian consciousness among the lower classes. The narrative structure of these tales follows a cyclical pattern of “fulfillment → deprivation → fulfillment,” revealing the tales as products of collective desire that supplement real deprivation with imagined fulfillment. Furthermore, the study argues that Choe Je-u folktales do not merely offer escapist utopias but rather reflect the people's active will for social transformation and hope. In conclusion, this research demonstrates that these folktales function as a medium for expressing the collective aspirations and transformative will of the subjugated classes, and that this utopian consciousness remains a relevant social message even today.
