Abstract

The “Evil Poor” folktale represents a type of wealth-acquisition(致富) folktales in which an impoverished protagonist amasses wealth by violently seizing the property of affluent relatives or others through means that transgress moral and legal boundaries. What distinguishes these experimental narratives within the tradition of Korean folktales is the absence of internal ethical mechanisms such as ‘encouragement of good and punishment of evil(勸善懲惡)’ or ‘karmic retribution(因果應報)’, which typically uphold the moral order of such stories. The protagonists in this narrative type are not poor due to personal failings but as victims of structural inequalities such as primogeniture, gender-based inheritance discrimination, and rigid class systems. Consequently, their targets for wealth appropriation are often beneficiaries of these oppressive systems, highlighting the protagonists' intense sense of relative deprivation. During the late Joseon(朝鮮) period, the collapse of the class hierarchy and the shift toward a commerce-based economy created new opportunities for the underprivileged to challenge wealth inequality. However, these folktales reveal a state apparatus that is either absent or exploited by criminal acts, resulting in a dystopian landscape devoid of public authority. The emergence of the “Evil Poor” as a new character type—coldly pursuing desire without humor—contrasts with the traditionally satirical trickster figures, reflecting the people’s anxiety, frustration, and deviant urges. Ultimately, these folktales critically mirror a society where structural inequality persists and legitimate avenues for economic aspiration are lacking, signaling a significant narrative shift in the tradition of Korean folktale literature.
