내생성을 고려한 일반철도 여객수요 결정요인에 대한 실증분석

본 연구는 직접수요모형을 이용하여 일반철도의 수송수요에 대한 결정요인을 사회경제적 요인들을 중심으로 실증적으로 분석한다. 대부분의 선행연구들과 달리 본 연구에서는 지역 내 인구와 사업체수를 각각 연령대별 분포와 산업별 분포로 세분하며 이들의 내생성을 함께 고려한다. 분석결과에 의하면, 연령대와 산업분류에 따라 수송수요가 상이하였다. 더불어, 인구와 사업체수가 수송수요에 영향을 미치지만 오히려 일반철도에 대한 접근성이 개선됨에 따라 지역 내 인구와 사업체수가 증가하는 역의 인과관계가 나타날 수 있다. 이들 변수의 과거 수치를 도구변수로 하는 2단계 최소자승추정(two-stage least square estimation)의 결과는 내생성 문제가 간과될 때 지역 내 인구와 산업 규모의 일반철도 여객수요에 대한 효과가 과소 추정될 수 있음을 제시한다.
Abstract
The paper empirically analyzes the determinants of transport demand of conventional trains focused on socio-economic factors by using a direct demand model. Differently from most previous studies, we decomposed the local population and the number of establishments into specific age cohorts and specific types of industry, respectively, while tackling the endogeneity issue. The results showed that the transport demand varied between age groups and the industry classifications. In addition, although the population and the number of establishments have an influence on the transport demand, a reverse causation where both of them may increase with better accessibility to normal railways could occur. The result of the two-stage least square estimation, which considers the past values of these variables as instrumental variables, suggests that the effect of local population and industry size on the general railroad demand would be underestimated when the endogeneity issue is overlooked.
