앤더슨은 마르크스의 후기 저작들에 대한 면밀한 분석을 통해, 노년의 마르크스가 사회발전에 대한 결정론적 모델로서의 단선적인 역사 이론을 부정하고 복선적인 역사발전론에 도달했다고 주장한다. 후대의 정통 마르크스주의자들과는 달리 마르크스는 서구의 자본주의 발전의 역사를 보편적 모델로 상정하고 그 모델에 비추어 주변부의 역사발전을 재단하는 서구중심주의와 붉은 오리엔탈리즘에서 벗어나기시작했다는 것이다. 그러나 “복선적이고 비결정론적 사상가”로서의 마르크스가 강조된 나머지, 마르크스의 주변부 연구에 내장된 지적 긴장이 너무 쉽게 절충론적으로 해소된 측면도 있다. 마르크스주의와 포스트식민주의의 이론적 접합은 어떻게 가능할 것인가라는 물음을 밑에 깔고, 마르크스 내부의 사상적 긴장을 논리적 극한까지 밀고 나아가 그것이 드러내는 균열 속에서 새로운 가능성을 찾는 것, 그것이 이 주제서평의 문제의식이다.
Abstract
Anderson deploys two critical arguments in the book. First, he traces Marx’s intellectual trajectory to show a clear shift from the Euro-centric unilinear development of the ‘History’ to the multilinear development of histories. Focusing on late Marx, Anderson tries to persuade the readers to save Marx from the real culprit of Red Orientalism. This point could be more persuasive if Anderson paid more attention to the global history of capitalism, particularly the primitive accumulation of capital. Second, Anderson argues that late Marx escaped from class essentialism by understanding the intersectionality of class, race, ethnicity, and nationalism. However, I wonder if one can use the Marxian theory of class as a form of strategic essentialism. Paradoxically in the postcolonial context, class essentialism can be closer to a methodological intersectionality than intersectional eclecticism.
