Abstract
This article revisits Marxist contributions to theories of East Asian capitalism, which have been almost forgotten since the collapse of the former Soviet Union. The article reconstructs the evolution of theories of East Asian capitalism during the 20th century as the succession of state capitalism, the developmental state school, the post-developmental state, and the thesis of new state capitalism. Existing theories of East Asian capitalism are shown to be problematic in that they share methodological nationalism, elite development theory, and developmentalism. Postcapitalism is proposed as a Marxist alternative to East Asian capitalism, as it adopts labor-centered and post-development approaches.
