본 연구는 칼 마르크스의 박사학위 논문인 「데모크리토스와 에피쿠로스 자연철학의 차이」에 대한 독해를 통해 그의 유물론을 새롭게 이해해 보려는 시도이다. 이 저작에 대한 해석을 통해 크게 네 개의 유물론(혹은 마르크스 유물론의 네 가지 면모) 을 부각시켰다. 첫째는 ‘초월성의 신학’에 맞서는 ‘내재성의 유물론’이다. 이 글에서는 초월적이고 이념적인 세계를 상정하고 그것을 기준으로 현실을 재단하고 대중의복종을 끌어내는 초월적 신학에 맞서 인간과 자연의 내재적 역량을 긍정하는 유물론의 전통을 확인했다. 둘째는 ‘목적론적 역사’에 맞서는 ‘사건의 유물론’이다.이 글에서는 에피쿠로스의 ‘클리나멘’ 개념에 대한 해석을 바탕으로, 마르크스가 한 시대의 사회적 구성과 해체를 어떻게 이해하는지를 보였다. 셋째는 ‘동일성의 존재론’에맞서는 ‘다양성의 유물론’이다. 이 글에서는 원자의 특성들에 대한 논의를 바탕으로, 동일성에 예속시키지 않으면서 차이들을 차이들로부터, 다양성을 다양성으로부터사유하는 것이 어떻게 가능한지를 보였다. 넷째는 ‘보편적 체계’에 맞서는 ‘해체의 유물론’이다. 마르크스는 원자론에 대한 에피쿠로스의 해체 작업에 주목했는데, 이를바탕으로 현실을 객관적이고 보편적인 체계로 설명하려는 시도들의 신화적 성격을비판했다. 끝으로 이 글에서는 에피쿠로스에 대한 마르크스의 독해 방법이 가진 의의를 강조했다. 이 글에서는 이를 ‘최대한으로 읽어내기’라고 명명했는데, 어떤 불합리성에 봉착하지 않는 한, 통념에 굴하지 않고 텍스트에 대한 해석을 계속해서 밀고나가는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 이를 통해 마르크스는 에피쿠로스에 대한 통상적인 해석과는 완전히 다른 해석에 이르렀고, 이를 통해 자신만의 독특한 유물론을 만들어낼 수 있었다.
Abstract
This paper is an attempt to gain a new understanding of Karl Marx’s materialism through a reading of his doctoral dissertation, “The Difference Bbetween the Democritean and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature”. Through the interpretation of this dissertation, thisThis paper reveals four aspects of Marx’s materialism.: The first is ‘the materialism of immanence’, which confronts the transcendent theology. This paper confirms the tradition of materialism that affirms the immanent power of humanity and nature against the a transcendent theology that assumes a transcendent being, judges reality based on it, and elicits obedience from people on that basis. The second is ‘the materialism of event’, which confronts the teleological view of history. Based on the interpretation of Epicurus’ concept of ‘clinamen’, this paper shows how Marx understood the social construction and deconstruction of an era. The third is ‘the materialism of diversity’, which confronts the ontology of the Same. Based on the discussion of the properties of atoms, this paper shows how it is possible to think of differences from differences and diversity from diversity, without relating them to the Same. The fourth is ‘the ‘materialism of deconstruction’, which that confronts the universal system. This paper shows that how Marx criticized the mythical nature of attempts to explain reality as an objective and universal system.
