Abstract
This study aims to identify the current meanings of Plato’s Politeia through the perspective of Marxism. Plato is known as the originator of metaphysics and dualism. His work has been treated not as an object of thorough examination but as a target of anti-materialist criticism. Yet despite its idealist elements, Plato’s Politeia has many ideas in common with Marxism and holds considerable lessons for understanding Stalinist bureaucracy. This study tries to seek a new theoretical alternative to both understanding Plato and current trends in Marxism, as well as distinguishing their commonalities. The most notable difference between Plato’s and Marxism’s theories of the state can be found in their positions towards the matter of the recognition of state. In Plato’s Politeia, the state is both a premise and purpose, while Marxism aims to extinguish the state. In other words, in Marxism the state is nothing but an apparatus for bourgeois domination and oppression. Therefore, it is considered an object to be eradicated by the communist society, the result of the socialist process named the ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’. In this context, the theory of state preconditions its ‘productive liquidation’. In the meantime, Plato’s state presupposes the prosperity of a community, banning private property for the class over the rulers. Its ultimate purpose, certainly, is human happiness. Plato’s theory of state can be called an ‘innovative constructionism’, in that it is designed through the use of institutions and education for the realization of happiness. There seems to be a need for the dialectical balance of ‘liquidation’ and ‘construction’.
