Abstract
Since the 16th century, the Yeongnam region secured a distinctive academic status through the competition and connections between the Toegye School(退溪學派) and the Nammyeong School(南冥學派). After the Injo Banjeong(仁祖反正), Nammyeong School in the Gang-u area faced a significant crisis, but it sought a breakthrough by establishing ties with and being absorbed into the Toegye School. The Toegye School also expanded its influence to secure academic leadership in the Yeongnam region by incorporating intellectuals from Gang-u area. This study focuses on the scholars from the Gang-u area who are included in the record of disciple the Toegye academic lineage, analyzing quantitatively the transmission, spread, and transformation of that scholarly tradition within the landscape of Gang-u Confucianism. After Yi Hwang(李滉), many Confucian scholars from the Gang-u region were integrated into the Toegye academic lineage centered around Jeong Gu(鄭逑) and Jang Hyeon-gwang(張顯光) of Seongju following the Injo Banjeong. Meanwhile, Jeong Gyeong-se(鄭經世) of Sangju distanced himself from the Nammyeong School and formed an independent scholarly group. In the mid-17th century, Yi Hyeon-il(李玄逸) attempted to reorganize the Toegye School around Andong. He actively collaborated with the Nammyeong School in Jinju, expanding the reach of the Toegye academic lineage and striving to overcome the crisis of the fragmented Yeongnam School. By the 18th century, the alliance between the two schools became more relaxed. In the early 19th century, Ryu Chi-myeong(柳致明) from Andong expanded the influence of the Toegye academic lineage throughout the entire Gang-u region, but by the time of Kim Heung-rak(金興洛), this influence had diminished once again. Ryu Ju-mok(柳疇睦) overcame the previous independence of his scholarly group and expanded its scope to include the Gang-u region. Jang Bok-chu(張福樞) actively absorbed scholars not only from the Seongju area but also from the mid-Nakdong River regions, such as Geochang, Hapcheon, and Changnyeong. These changes were also linked to the reorganization of the Gang-u Confucian scholars centered around Heo Jeon. Since the 17th century, Jinju and other central regions of the Nammyeong School have maintained significant connections with the Toegye academic lineage. This was driven by efforts to sustain the continuity of Confucianism, grounded in the scholarly solidarity of the "Yeongnam School" The overlap of scholars in these regions was also active, and they played a crucial role in the Confucian academic circles of Gang-u in the 19th century.
