이 글은 마르크스주의적 사회구성체론의 혁신을 위해 니클라스 루만의 사회체계론 혹은, 보다 포괄적으로는, (사회)체계에 대한 오토포이에시스적 접근을 활용한이론적 사례 하나를 해명한다. 그 사례는 밥 제솝의 전략관계적 접근이다. 따라서 이글은 루만과 마르크스에 대한 직접적 비교를 목표로 하기보다 지난 50년 동안 마르크스주의적 전통에서 이론적 작업을 수행한 제솝이 사회구조와 행위성, 그리고 사회구성체에 대한 전략관계적 접근을 발전시키는 과정에서 왜 그리고 어떻게 ‘루만을경유한 칠레생물학’을 활용했는지 그리고 그 결과는 어떻게 평가될 수 있는지 등을검토하려는 시도다. 이를 통해 이 글은 ① 사회체계론과 사회구성체론 간의 관계에대한 새로운 관점을 제시하고 ② 비판적 실재론적 사회(공간)이론 중 하나의 발전사와 활용 방식을 보여줄 뿐 아니라 ③ 제솝의 국가론, 조절접근, 거버넌스연구, 그리고 비판적 기호분석에 대한 우리의 이해를 심화시킨다. 나아가 그 과정에서 이 글은④ (최종심급에서) 경제적인 것의 결정과 상부구조의 상대적 자율성이 아니라 ‘생태적 지배’, ‘작동상의 자율성’, ‘구조적 결합’과 ‘전략적 조정’, ‘체계’와 ‘생활세계’가 결합하여 이루는 ‘생태적 질서’ 등의 개념을 중심으로 하는 새로운 사회구성체론을 해명함으로써 전통적 사회구성체론 및 현재의 사회체제론에 대한 대안을 제시하고자한다.
Abstract
This article elucidates a theoretical case for using Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory — or, more broadly, an autopoieticist approach to systems — to renew the Marxist theory of social formation. The case in point is Bob Jessop’s strategic–relational approach. Accordingly, rather than directly comparing Luhmann and Marx, it examines why and how Jessop sought to incorporate Chilean biology via Luhmann and his colleagues in formulating his account of social structure, agency, and social formations, and how this can be evaluated. In doing so, the article: (1) offers a new perspective on the relationship between systems theory and social formation theory; (2) traces the development of the critical realist social theory; (3) deepens understanding of Jessop’s theories of the state, régulation, governance, and semiosis; and (4) advances an alternative to both traditional theories of social formation and South Korean scholars’ eclectic theory of social system/regime.
