Abstract

This study examines the life and scholarly orientation of Donggye Gwon Do (1575–1644), a major figure of the Nammyeong school in the Gangu region during the early seventeenth century. Gwon Do lived through a series of national upheavals—the Imjin War, the Gyehae Political Purge, and the Jeongmyo and Byeongja Wars—so that his seventy-year life coincided with the period of intense turbulence in Joseon society and the rise and decline of the Nammyeong school. His life can be divided into two distinct phases: the self-contented lifeof a recluse before entering official service and the upright, remonstrative lifeof a bureaucrat after his appointment. This paper explores how his academic orientation emerged through these turning points and how it was reflected in his political activities. Although he passed the civil service examination in 1613 at the age of thirty-nine, Gwon Do declined to take office. Until his appointment following the Gyehae coup in 1623, he lived in seclusion at his home in Dangae-ri, pursuing a life of self-cultivation and withdrawal. This period marked the fragmentation of the Gangu Nammyeong school into the Daebuk and Jungbuk factions, and the collision between Confucian idealism and political reality was at its peak under King Gwanghae. Gwon Do studied under Songam Yi Ro, Hangang Jeong Gu, and Yeoheon Jang Hyeon-gwang, maintaining the tension between Confucian moral discipline and pragmatic awareness of realityeven while remaining apart from the world. At forty-nine, he entered government service as a junior secretary(注書) of the Seungjeongwon, beginning an official career largely centered on the posts of remonstrating officials(言官職). During roughly fifteen years in office, he experienced numerous promotions, transfers, demotions, and reinstatements, yet his unwavering commitment to moral integrity and direct admonitionremained constant. He criticized the excessive rewards granted to meritorious subjects and opposed the expansion of the posthumous title of King Wonjong, which led to his exile to Haenam. Such incidents, however, stemmed from his Confucian conviction to uphold Heavenly Principle(天理) in the face of worldly corruption. Particularly, an analysis of the seven fu(賦) and three admonitory essays(箴) in the Donggyejipclarifies the stages of his moral self-cultivation and the fundamental structure of his learning. The four fu—Simgwan-fu, Ipdeokmun-fu, Sinjil-yujojeong-fu, and Cheonsim-mugae-i-fu—represent a progressive process of Confucian moral cultivation through the stages of self-discipline(修心), entering virtue(入德), regulating the body(治身), and uniting with Heaven(合天). In addition, the three admonitions—Yangsim-gawayok-jeom, Jayang-jeom, and Simjaseong-jigun-jeom—emphasize autonomous moral training through reverence(敬), showing that Gwon Do sought throughout his life to internalize and actualize moral principle in reality. Gwon Do was thus an exceptional scholar-official who, despite having no earlier experience in statecraft, demonstrated how Confucian learning could function within the political realm during the decline of the Nammyeong school in the Gangu region. This study not only restores Gwon Do’s neglected position in post-Injo Nammyeong scholarship but also contributes to filling the historical gap in seventeenth-century Gangu intellectual history, where the theoretical heritage of Toegye and the practical spirit of Nammyeong converged in the Gangu Confucian tradition.
