정보기술(IT)은 시기 및 단계에 따라 기업성과에 상이한 역할을 수행하여 왔다. 이를 반영하여 본 연구에서는 IT 의 기업생산성에 대한 효과를 직접적인 부분과 기업의 무형자산(조직 및 프로세스 혁신 등)에 보완적인 투자로부터 기인하는 간접적인 부분으로 구분·분석하였다. 즉, 본 연구에서는 첫째, IT 자본과 비 IT 자본의 한계수익을 비교하여‘초과수익(excess return)’현상이 존재하는지를 살펴보았고 둘째, 기업의 무형자산이 추가된 생산함수를 설정한 후, IT의 직접적 효과와 간접적 효과를 구분하여 우리나라에서 IT가 조직 및 기업 프로세스 등과 결합하여 기업성과에 긍정적인 효과를 가지는지를 미국의 경우와 비교하여 분석하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 국내 상장기업을 대상으로한 기업데이터를 이용하였고, 분석기간은 2000~2001년으로 삼았다. 본 연구의 주된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국내에서 IT 자본과 비 IT 자본은 각각 28.9%와 3.8%의 한계수익률을 나타내어 IT 자본이 비 IT 자본에 비해 약25%p 정도의 초과수익을 누리는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 이러한 IT 자본스톡의 초과수익을 생산성에 대한 직접적인기여와 간접적인 기여로 구분하여 분석한 결과, 직접적인 생산요소로서 IT의 기여도는 존재하지만, IT 자본이 기업조직 변화 및 프로세스 개선 등 무형자산과 보완적으로 작용하여 발생하는 수익률은 오히려 陰인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 통해 국내 기업의 IT 투자는 아직 기업의 구조조정이나 조직의 변화 등에 응용되는 단계에 이르지 못하는 것을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
Information Technology has performed different role in different time affecting business performance. Reflecting the feature, this paper explicitly split the productivity effect of IT into direct effect and indirect effect. In this paper, I compare, first, the rate of return on IT capital and non-IT capital, and see whether excess return on IT is found in the domestic data. Next, I added the intangible asset, such as organizational change and process reengineering, into ordinary production function, and see the direct and indirect effect of IT stock. The results are followings. First, domestic results show that IT stock has about 25% excess return compared to non-IT stock. Second, while direct effect of IT stock is positive and significant, the indirect effect, which operate through the complementary process with intangible assets, is negative. From the result, we might conclude that the pattern of IT usage has not yet reached the state that IT is applied for organizational change and restructuring.
