Abstract

This study examines the cultural identity of Chinese diaspora poetry in Canada. By tracing the history and current status of Chinese immigrants, it explores how their poetry reflects experiences of migration, labor, discrimination, exclusion, assimilation, and hybridity. The study first looks at the writings of modern intellectuals such as 黃遵憲(Huang Zun Xian), 康有為(Kang you wei), and 梁啓超(Liang Qi Chao), who laid the foundation for early Chinese poetry in Canada. Their works document the lives of Chinese immigrants who directly engaged with Canadian society and show how they navigated new developments in the West. In addition, classical pieces like “壁詩(Wall Poems)”, written by laborers who came to Canada to work on gold mining and railway construction, reveal how a distinct Chinese Canadian identity began to form. Amid these contexts, Chinese immigrants created a “Chinatown” communal identity to safeguard their rights and maintain solidarity. However, during the Chinese Exclusion Act period (1923–1947), they faced harsh measures such as the head tax, which deepened their marginalization. The changes in immigration policy and the introduction of multiculturalism in the 1970s brought further shifts in their identity. Against this background, immigrants from Hong Kong began to move beyond the “sojourner” mindset and developed a new sense of self as “Chinese Canadians.” Representative poets include 盧因(Lu Yin) and 韓牧(Han Mu), whose poems express this evolving identity and subjectivity shaped by their diasporic lives. Furthermore, poets such as 鄭南川(Zheng Nan Chuan), who studied abroad and later settled as citizens, illustrate cultural and political subjectivity from the perspective of more established immigrants. In conclusion, Chinese diaspora poetry in Canada offers a candid portrayal of the lives of Chinese laborers and immigrants, capturing their struggles against discrimination and exclusion, and ultimately reflecting their pursuit of an autonomous and self-affirming identity.
