Abstract
The media environment is changing speedier than ever before as with other information and telecommunication related technologies. Television is at the center of such changes, starting from cable and satellite television to even smarter versions such as interactive television and web television. Understanding how television audiences behave in terms of selecting and attending to television channels and programs adds on importance not only for the analysis of the medium itself but also for the accumulation of knowledge of how audio-visual type of information is consumed regardless of specific technology. The study reported here is a descriptive analysis of television viewing behaviors of Korean adults as of 2002 as they are immersed in multichannel television and the Internet. A national survey of 2500 samples was conducted and analyzed on their viewing time, attitude towards different media, dependency regarding media, main purpose for using the Internet, and so on. Television viewing audiences were divided into groups based on their multichannel environment, media dependency, and the type of television consumption, and the viewing patterns of these groups were compared in order to grasp the meaning of television audience behavior as a whole as they are more and more diversified into non-coherent non-masses. The survey found that there is a small group of people who refuse to embrace multichannel television who not only consume television and other media less but also have a negative attitude toward the value of such information services. The existence of such group, albeit small, shows that there is a potential for social gap originating from the differences of the media environment.
