Abstract
This study examines the counting ability of children aged 3 to 5, especially their capacity to say numbers and count objects verbally by using two different types of Korean number words - purely home-grown words and those derived from Chinese characters. For this study, researchers tested 210 children in that age group by using techniques based on the study of Hong Hae Kyung(1991) ; Payne & Huinker(1993). The results are as follows:(1) When using number words that originated form Chinese characters, three-year-olds on an average could say numbers up to 18 in their correct order, four-year-olds to 50, and five-year olds to 112. When they used number words that have nothing to do with Chinese characters, children aged three could say numbers up to 13, four-year-olds to 15 and five-year-olds to 45. In the case of object counting, the average was 15 for three-year-olds, 42 to four-year-olds and 93 for five-year-olds. (2) Childrens counting ability is affected by their age and type of counting.
