오늘날 교육의 인간화나 인성교육의 필요성을 역설하는 목소리가 높은 것은 그만큼 우리의 교육현실이 잘못된 지향을 보이고 있다는 것을 말해준다. 오늘날의 잘못 방향 잡힌 교육문제를 역사적 조망을 통해 바르게 인식하기 위해서도 논의의 기준을 전통교육에서 찾을 필요가 있다. 본고에서 퇴계의 교육학적 입론에 주목하는 것은 퇴계사상이 전통교육의 이상을 압축된 형태로 갖추고 있다고 보기 때문이다. 퇴계는 인격의 개념 및 구조에 대해 분명한 이해체계를 확립하였고, 인격교육에 대한 이념적 지향과 방법적 기준을 교육학적 구도를 통해 모색하였다. 이러한 인격교육에 관한 퇴계의 구상은 자신의 인격자로서의 삶의 모습에도 그대로 투영되었음을 확인할 수 있다. 퇴계는 주자학의 도덕이론을 기반으로 하여 자신의 인격교육에 관한 구상을 확립하였다. 퇴계는 인간의 마음은 광활하고 거대한 것이어서 이에 대한 접근과 이해에는 특별한 대책이 필요하다고 보았다. 퇴계의 인격교육론은 문제의 파악과 판단과 반성의 소재를 나 자신에게서 찾아야 한다는 선진유학․주자학의 논법을 재해석하는 방식을 취하면서, 경의 태도를 확립하고 존재의 최고상태를 지향하는 일에 관한 교육학적 주장을 분명하게 제시하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate Toigye’s view of moral character education. According to Toigye’s opinion, the self-cultivation which brings about the attainment of an ideal man has to meet the conditions of respectfulness. Respectfulness generally means to develop an attitude of concentration of the mind. But, according to Toigye, it means to further cultivate moral characteristics such as sincerity, increase of moral strength and the requital of others’ kindness. In this sense, tasks of education which brings about the attainment of an ideal man has to meet the conditions of respectfulness. The major goal of education was not so much the transmission of knowledge or the learning of skills as the internalization of a set of ethical principles which governed human behaviour in all conceivable situations.
