Abstract
The present study examined sexually abused experiences of female adolescents in a juvenile detention home and differences in the psychological maladjustment among different types of sexually abused female adolescents. This study also examined the relationship among coping strategies, attribution style, and psychological maladjustment. Four instruments (Sexual Abuse Experience Questionnaire, Sexual Abuse Attribution Style Inventory, Coping Resources Inventory for Sexual Abuse, and SCL-90-R) were administered on 126 girls who were in a juvenile detention home in Kyung-gi province. The main results were following: First, 65.87% of female adolescents experienced sexual abuse. Second, sexually abused female adolescents had more severe psychological maladjustment than the subjects who had no experience of sexually abuse. Third, exposure to sexual abuse and subsequent responses from others was the most influential factor in psychological maladjustment. Other-blame attribution style, expressive-cognitive coping strategies, and self-destructive coping strategies showed statistically significant relationships with psychological maladjustment. Especially, other-blame attribution style, self-destructive coping strategies, and exposure to sexual abuse were the most significant predictors. The results suggested personally experienced feeling on sexual abuse, attribution style, and coping strategy had more significant influence on psychological adjustment than sexual abuse experience itself. The limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies were discussed.
