이 연구의 목적은 청소년의 잠재적 학업중단이 학교교육에 제기하는 의미와 과제를 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 수도권 중등학교 교사 면담을 통해 전반적인 학업중단의 유형과 양상, 잠재적 학업중단 청소년들을 둘러싼 사회문화적 특성 진단과 학교의 대처를 분석하고, 잠재적 학업중단이 학교교육에 던지는 과제를 정리하였다. 연구 결과는 학업중단은 비행이나 문제 행동으로 인한 특정 학생들의 문제가 아니라 학교교육의 의미를 상실한 많은 청소년들의 문제라는 것을 드러내고 있다. 이러한 문제를 개선하기 위해서는 다양한 청소년 전문기관들을 확충하고 학교와의 연계를 강화하는 한편 유연한 교육과정 운영이 가능한 학교 내의 영역들을 늘려가야 할 것이다.
Abstract
It is reported that the rate of school dropout has been recently declined. Does this prove that schooling functions efficiently? The purpose of this paper is to investigate the educational meaning of recent trend of school drop-out. For this, this study focuses on latent school dropout. We conducted in-depth interviews with middle and high school teachers who have taught students over 5 years. As a result of analysis, the categories of school dropout youth are drawn and divided into three groups. They are the youth who constantly cross the border between school and society; who stay in school but not necessarily learn, and who isolate themselves from school and society. Among these, voluntary withdrawal which was found in the late of 1990's now appears seldom. Instead, enervation of youths, lack of family caring, and the incompetence of school have become the notable features found in the latent dropout. The study suggests that it is necessary to create various spaces for learning to meet youths' various needs.
