중학교 단계에서의 학습부진 결정 요인 분석

초록

본 연구는 한국교육종단연구(KELS) 자료를 다층모형을 통해 분석하여 중학교 단계에서의 학습부진이 어떠한 요인들에 의해 야기되는지를 구명하였다. 분석 결과 다음과 같은 사항들을 확인할 수 있었다. 첫째, 부모학력과 빈곤 여부가 학습부진 여부에 독립적인 영향력을 행사하고 있었다. 특히 빈곤 여부는 학습부진에 대한 가구소득 및 결손가정 여부의 영향력을 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 학부모의 학업적 지원은 가정의 사회경제적 배경 변수들과 독립적으로 학습부진 여부에 영향력을 행사하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 학업적 지원은 자습 시간과 사교육 시간을 증가시키는 동시에 교과목 효능감과 학업자아개념 등을 제고하는 데 영향을 끼침으로써 학습부진 여부에 간접적인 영향을 끼치고 있음도 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 학습시간이 학습부진 여부에 대해 끼치는 영향력의 양상을 확인할 수 있었다. 분석 결과 자습 시간보다는 사교육 시간이 학습부진이 될 개연성을 낮추는 데 더 큰 기여를 하는 것으로 나타났지만, 학습부진 여부에 독립적인 영향력을 행사하는 교과목 효능감과 학업자아개념이 자습 시간보다는 사교육 시간에 의해 더 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타나 궁극적으로는 자습 시간도 사교육 시간 못지않게 학습부진을 예방하는 데 기여하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 넷째, 교과목 효능감이나 학업자아개념이 학습부진 여부에 영향을 끼친다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 나아가 본 연구에서는 교사가 학생들에게 지적인 도전감을 자극하고 적극적인 참여를 유도하는 수업 활동을 제공하게 되면 해당 교과목에 대한 효능감과 학업자아개념이 높아지며, 이것이 결국은 학습부진의 예방으로 이어지게 될 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 다섯째, 학교 수준에서는 평균 SES와 성취압력이 학습부진 여부에 유의미한 영향력을 행사하고 있었다. 이 중에서 평균 SES가 높은 학교에 재학 중일수록 학습부진에 해당할 개연성이 낮게 나타난다는 것은 소득 재분배 정책이나 재학생들의 인적 구성을 다양화하기 위한 노력 등과 같이 학교의 평균 SES를 제고하려는 노력이 병행되어야만 학습부진 예방 대책이 실효를 거둘 수 있음을 시사하는 것이다.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors that influence underachievement in Korean middle schools with the data obtained from the Korea Education Longitudinal Study (KELS). The five major findings can be summarized as follows. First, parents’ low level of education and poverty independently influence their children’s underachievement. In particular, poverty mediates the influences of ‘household income’ and ‘parentless family’ variables upon underachievement. Second, parental involvement has an influence on their children’s underachievement independently from the family’s SES variable. Parental involvement is also found to have an indirect impact on preventing children’s underachievement by increasing the hours for both self-study and private tutoring, as well as by developing subject-efficacy and the conception of the self as learner. Third, this study found out the ways in which study time influences students’ underachievement. The analysis shows that private tutoring hours prevent underachievement better than self-study time, but also that self-study time has a greater affect than private tutoring hours on subject-efficacy and the conception of the self as learner, both of which have independent influences on underachievement. Fourth, as alluded to earlier, subject-efficacy and the conception of the self as learner have an influence on underachievement. Furthermore, it is found that teacher instruction that stimulates students’ intellectual challenges and invites their active participation in learning activities can increase subject-efficacy and self-concept as learner, which will in turn prevent underachievement. Fifth, on the school level, schools’ average SES and degrees of pressure for learning achievement have a significant influence on preventing underachievement. A school’s high SES is likely to lower the possibility of underachievement. These findings may present the policy implication that preventing underachievement requires diversifying student population, in particular based upon each school’s socio-economic background.
