Abstract

For the past few years, standardization for LTE system has been successfully done and accordingly a lot of service providers are now preparing for earnest deployments of LTE system all around the world. As standardization for LTE system was coming to an end, there have been increasing demands for more advanced future communication system from various standpoints such as system throughput, packet delay, peak data rate, etc, which led to an introduction of new marketing terminology, so called IMT-Advanced system as defined by ITU-R. LTE-Advanced can be outlined as system now under study in 3GPP aiming toward to be coincident with IMT-Advanced system requirements. In this paper, we introduce the trends and status of the standardization activities for LTE-Advanced system, which is nowadays under the center and focus of 3GPP technical discussion. Even though there exist other strong rivalry technologies, LTE-Advanced system is widely perceived as the strongest candidate to become a major trend in the future market for next generation communication system. Therefore, a lot of performance enhancing techniques and component technologies have been proposed and investigated in 3GPP WGs in order to satisfy both IMT-Advanced system requirements and more stringent LTE-Advanced system requirements. Here, we will first look at what kinds of requirements LTE-Advanced system should satisfy in order to be ratified as IMT-Advanced system and then investigate what kinds of component technologies are now being studied in 3GPP WGs to meet these system requirements.
