Abstract

School adaptation is a stepping stone for successful adolescent growth and development. Although economically disadvantaged adolescents are generally reported to have more difficulty coping with school, it is not always the case. Under the assumption that there is a certain factor influencing on the gap in the level of school adaptation, this study examined the effects of ego-resilience, which helps people to maintain well-being under adverse circumstances, on the trajectories of school adaptation among poor adolescents and compared with non-poor adolescents. The sample used in this study was 321 poor adolescents and 1,845 non-poor adolescents of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year survey for 1st grader in middle school, which came from Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey by the Korea Institute for Youth Development. Data was analyzed utilizing latent growth model analysis and multi-group analysis using SEM. The results showed that regardless of poverty, ego-resilience tends to increase school adaptation. With years, however, ego-resilient adolescents in poverty increase school adaptation modestly than those not, which appears to be marginally significant(p<.10). Meanwhile, non-poor adolescents show similar changes in trajectories which are more statistically significant(p<.00) though there was no significant differences in main paths between two groups. Consequently, positive effects of ego-resilience on the initial level of school adaptation are likely to decrease with time for both groups. Based on these findings, several considerations to enhance school adaptation of adolescents in poverty are discussed.
