소포클레스의 비극 '콜로노스의 오이디푸스'는 ‘테바이 3부작’의 완성작이라는 점에서 주목할 만한 가치가 있는 작품이다. 내용상으로는 '오이디푸스 왕'과 '안티고네'를 연결해주고 있어 ‘테바이 3부작’에 대한 일관성 있는 해석을 가능하게 하고, 교육적 측면에서는 아테네의 시대 상황을 반영한 도덕교육과 시민교육적 내용을 다루고 있다. 테바이에서 추방당한 후 유랑생활을 하던 오이디푸스는 아테네의 영웅 테세우스의 도움으로 콜로노스에서 영면하게 된다. 오이디푸스는 지속적인 노력과 의지를 통해 자신을 속박하던 저주에서 벗어나 영웅적 인간으로 거듭난다. 자신에게 주어진 비극적 상황을 회피하지 않고 대면했던 그의 삶은 진정한 정의(dikē)를 달성하는 과정으로 테세우스의 도움과 신들의 인정을 받게 된다. 오염(miasma)과 모욕(hybris) 속에서도 지속적으로 정진하는 오이디푸스의 모습은 아테네 시민들에게 도덕적인 자아의 완성을 요구하고 있다. 동시에 오이디푸스는 자신을 추방했던 테바이에 분노하며 자신을 시민으로 인정해준 아테네를 이들로부터 수호할 것을 선언한다. 테바이의 군주였던 그가 조국을 저주하며 아테네를 새로운 조국으로 내면화는 과정은 시민들의 정서적 동요를 막고 안정적인 일체감을 구현하는 기능을 수행한다. 탄원자를 보호하고 신의 뜻을 준수하며 오만을 경계하는 아테네가 결국 전쟁의 승리자가 될 것이라는 현자의 메시지는 시민들 개개인이 공통의 시민성을 함양하는데 기여했을 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
Purpose: This study outlines the components of the moral and civic education in Oedipus at Colonus. Athenian education is reviewed as an example of a city-state which effectively reinforced its citizens’ loyalty and morality thorough the performance of tragedies at the Dionysus festival. This study sought to contribute lots of ideas and practical methods for moral and civic education in Korea. Design/methodology/data/approach: The authors analyze the classic literature of Sophocles, and other major works from Greek philosophers and contemporary research articles. This study’s methodology is based entirely on literary review. Findings/Results: The findings of this study reveal clearly that the Greek tragedy Oedipus at Colonus and its components could be used for moral and civic education. In Oedipus at Colonus, Athens and Thebes are compared in a manner which reveals certain notions of civic education. Athens was a just and honorable city-state and even strangers who were driven out of their own polis were guaranteed safety and justice within Athens. The production capacity and the military strength of Athens was greater than that of Thebes and thus Theseus was able to put an end to Creon’s hubristic assault on Athens. Even though the real situation was much worse than its description, Sophocles tried to make Athenians feel pride for their polis and proposed Oedipus as a paradigm for their suffering. Value: The result of this study could be used to consider alternative, practical methods with which to educate moral citizens. By focusing on the intermediality in the play, civic education could encourage students to internalize moral and civic values as they exist in the real world.
