청소년 참여활동 경험이 초기 성인기 시민의식과 사회참여에 미치는 영향

초록

본 연구는 청소년 참여활동 경험에 관한 잠재계층유형을 확인하고, 이들 유형별 초기 성인기 시민의식과 사회참여 활동에 관한 차이를 검증하였다. 이를 위해 한국교육개발원의 「한국교육종단연구(Korea Educational Longitudinal Study) 2005」 1차년도-3차년도, 9차년도의 자료를 활용하여 분석하였다. 구체적으로 2005년 중학교 1학년 시점에서부터 2007년 중학교 3학년이 된 시점까지의 청소년기 자료와, 이들이 22세 초기 성인기에 해당하는 시점인 9차년도의 자료를 분석하였으며, 최종 3,009명의 자료를 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 중학교 3년간 학생들의 교내외 참여활동 양상에 대한 4개 잠재계층유형(교내동아리참여군, 교외동아리참여군, 학생회참여군, 참여저조군)을 확인하였다. 둘째, 초기 성인기의 시민의식에 대한 차이검증을 실시한 결과, 잠재계층유형별로 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 나타났으며, 특히 학생회참여군의 초기 성인기 시민의식이 다른 잠재계층에 비해 높게 나타났다. 셋째, 잠재계층유형별로 초기 성인기의 정치참여 중 선거참여, 온라인 토론방 참여와 자원봉사 활동 참여 행동에서 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 통하여 청소년기의 참여활동 경험은 초기 성인기의 적극적이고 능동적인 사회참여를 위한 자양분으로 작용함을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 추가적으로 예비시민의 한 사람으로서 사회정서적 역량개발이 중요하며, 이를 목표로 한 프로그램의 개발 및 제공이 이루어져야 할 것이다. 동시에 청소년의 참여활동의 양적 확대와 질적 향상을 위하여 학교현장과 지역사회와의 연계를 제안하고자 한다

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the latent class of youth participation and to examine whether significant differences in the civic awareness and social participation of early adults were observed between these latent classes. Design/methodology/data/approach: Using the data from the Korean Educational Longitudinal Study (KELS) 2005, collected from the 1st year to 3rd year and 9th year survey, we analyzed the participation aspect of the latent classes. Specifically, to classify students into discrete groups, latent class model analysis was conducted using the data in adolescence from 7th graders (2005) to 9th graders (2007); and the differences between groups were verified using 9th year data (2014), which surveyed 22 year old respondents; an analysis was made of the respondents(n=3,009) who answered all the four-year questionnaires. Findings/Results: First, the latent class analysis revealed a four-class solution: the School Clubbers, the School Representatives, the Street Actors, and the Low Participation Group. Second, the members of the School Representatives showed the highest civic awareness compared to other groups of students. Third, political participation (voting, on-line discussion) and volunteer activities in young adulthood were found to be statistically significant among latent classes; especially members of the Street Actors and the School Representatives who play an active role in social participation activities. Value: The results described here could highlight a need for youth participation experiences to help youngsters become active citizens in the future. This study, moreover, suggests that the following be implemented: youth participation programs to develop socio-emotional competency, especially for the Low Participation Group as well as setting up effective strategies such as connecting communities and schools to provide hands-on youth participation activities.
