Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to classify latent groups of grade school children based on four aggression types and to test the psychosocial differences among those groups. Design/methodology/data/approach: The data used for this study was 1,641 (boys 772, girls 869) grade school children from the ClassNet program which was developed to diagnose peer relationships funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The self-report method was used to measure the functions of aggression, purposeful vs. reactive, and the peer nomination for the forms of aggression, overt vs. relational. Latent profile analysis was implemented to classify the children and multiple logistic regression to test the significance of psychosocial differences among the groups classified. Findings/ Results: The results indicated that three different latent groups were legitimate: ‘non-aggression’ group (81.6%, 1,339), ‘purposeful aggression’ group (11,5%, 188), and ‘combined aggression’ group (6.9%, 114). The findings showed that the higher the negative behavior score, the greater the possibility of being classified as ‘purposeful’ and ‘combined’ aggression groups. The higher the positive psychology and character score, the greater the possibility of being classified as ‘non-aggression’ group. Values: Aggression has many facets and different underlying mechanisms. Therefore, aggression prevention programs should have various approaches to reduce children's aggressive behavior properly.
