Abstract
The primary purpose of the present study is to examine the structural relationships among smartphone dependency, internet cognitive failure, peer relationship, academic stress, and happiness of high school students. The subjects were 195 students attending the same high school in South Korea.A hypothetical model was composed of smartphone dependency and internet cognitive failure as exogenous variables, peer relationship, academic stress, and happiness as endogenous variables. The result of this study through structural equation modeling analysis is as follows: First, smartphone dependency significantly affect internet cognitive failure. Second, smartphone dependency and internet cognitive failure significantly affect peer relationship. Third, smartphone dependency and internet cognitive failure significantly affect academic stress. Fourth, smartphone dependency and peer relationship significantly affect happiness. These results imply that smartphone dependency and internet cognitive failure considerably influence high school students’ life overall. Based on these findings, in order to improve the quality of life in high school students, education and counselling professionals should develop programs that focus on smartphone dependency and internet cognitive failure. Also, they should provide various educational and counselling strategies to high school students to effectively use smartphone and internet.
