Abstract
This study investigated the effects of ostracism experience and childhood abuse experience on the borderline personality characteristics in 130 adolescents in juvenile detention facilities. Participants completed the Personality Assessment Inventory for Adolescent(PAI-A). Results showed that, when gender and childhood abuse experience were controlled for, social ostracism experience was significantly correlated with the composite scores of the PAI-A Borderline Features(BOR), and three sub-scales of the BOR, including affective instability (BOR-A), identity problems(BOR-I), and negative relationships(BOR-N). Also, the sub-scale of social ostracism, experience of being rejected by others, significantly predicted the two sub-scales of PAI-A BOR, BOR-A and BOR-N, while the sub-scale of social ostracism, experience of being neglected by others, significantly predicted the BOR-I. However, Ostracism experience was not a significant predictor of self-harm(BOR-S), while gender and childhood abuse experience significantly predicted BOR-S. Our findings suggest that ostracism experience could be a major factor in explaining borderline personality traits in juvenile offenders, and therefore, the therapeutic intervention for ostracism experience may be important in improving their quality of life and preventing long-term crime.
