Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the educational vulnerability and potential of students from low-income backgrounds in terms of social capital. Design/methodology/data/approach: This study used the 2nd and 3rd data of the longitudinal study of the educational welfare priority support program collected by the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI). The social capital level of low-income class students was compared with the others, and a hierarchical linear model was employed to analyze the effect of social capital on student’s school adaptation, class attitude, and achievement. Findings/results: The results are as follows: 1) The low-income background students tend to have a lower level of social capital, at homes, schools, and in local communities. 2) At the student level, the students’ social capital has a significant effect on their adaptation to school environments, class attitude, and academic achievement. 3) The social capital at the school level, especially with regards to teachers and friends, has a consistent relationship with the students’ school adaptation and class attitude, but not their achievement. 4) Social capital at the school level seems insufficient to alleviate the disadvantages of low-income class students in a school. Value: The findings suggest that social capital should be paid attention to in order to compensate for the educational disadvantages of low-income class students. It is especially meaningful to consider an individual student in the process of forming social capital for low-income class students.
