주된 학비마련 방법에 따른 대학생활 적응 및 학업성취 변화추이 분석

초록

본 연구는 한국교육개발원에서 제공하는 「한국교육종단연구 2005」의 7~9차년도 자료를 사용하여 주된 학비마련 방법에 따른 대학생활 적응 및 학업성취 변화추이를 분석하고자 하였다. 점차 가중되어 가는 대학생과 가계의 학비 부담을 완화하기 위해, 2009년 이후 본격적으로 정부 차원의 고등교육 부문에 대한 투자가 확대되었다. 이에 따라 학자금 지원 정책 효과를 분석하는 연구가 꾸준히 수행되어 왔으나, 대부분 학자금 지원 정책의 수혜 여부에 따른 효과에 주목한 경향이 있다. 이 연구에서는 학자금 지원 금액(장학금, 학자금 대출)이 등록금에서 차지하는 비중에 따라 그 효과가 차등적일 것이라는 가정 하에 주된 학비마련 방법이 장학금, 학자금 대출, 혹은 가족 및 친척의 지원인지에 따라 집단을 구분하였다. 아울러, 집단별 대학생활 적응 및 학업성취의 변화가 다른지를 살펴보기 위해 잠재성장모형을 사용하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학 재학 4년 동안, 학업적 적응과 학업성취는 시간이 지남에 따라 선형적으로 증가했고, 사회적 적응은 선형적으로 감소했으며, 일반적 적응은 유의한 변화를 보이지 않았다. 둘째, 학업적･사회적 대학생활 적응의 경우 주된 학비마련 방법의 영향이 시점에 관계 없이 동일하게 나타난 반면, 학업성취의 경우 주된 학비마련 방법의 영향이 시점별로 상이하게 나타났다. 셋째, 학업적 적응, 사회적 적응, 학업성취 모두 반복되는 장학금 수혜 또는 대출에 따른 지속적 효과는 없었다. 넷째, 대출이 주된 학비마련 방법인 학생의 학교생활 적응 및 학업성취 변화추이는 다른 집단과 유의하게 다르지 않았으나, 장학금이 주된 학비마련 방법인 학생의 사회적 적응의 감소율은 다른 집단에 비해 다소 작았다. 이 연구는 주된 학비마련 방법이 4년 동안의 대학생활 적응 및 학업성취도의 변화 추이에 미치는 영향을 밝혔다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한, 장학금 및 대출 수혜 여부에 따른 효과가 아니라 대학 등록금의 50% 이상을 충당한 방법의 효과를 분석했다는 의의가 있다.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out whether the effects of the financial aid policy for college students are different according to its proportion relative to total tuition. Methodology: In order to identify the differential effects of financial aid policy, three types of primary method for preparing tuition fees were defined: scholarships, student loans, and support from family or relatives. Then, the college students were divided into groups according to their primary tuition payment method. Latent growth modeling was used to examine whether changes in adaptation to college life and academic achievement differ among groups. Findings: First, during four years in college, academic adaptation and academic achievement increased linearly with time, social adaptation decreased linearly, and general adaptation did not show any significant change. Second, in the case of academic and social adaptation, the effect of the primary tuition payment method was the same regardless of the sampled point of time. Third, academic adaptation, social adaptation, and academic achievement did not have a persistent effect of scholarships or loans. Fourth, the change of adaptation to college life and academic achievement of students whose primary method of tuition payment was loans was not significantly different from those of other groups. However, the rate of decrease of social adaptation of students whose primary method of tuition payment was scholarships was slightly smaller than those of other groups. Value: This study showed the effects of primary tuition payment method on change of adaptation to college life and academic achievement during four years in college. Also, the effects of the primary payment method of covering more than 50% of tuition fees were analyzed in this study.
