아칸 예술의 무형적 측면은 아칸 예술이 그 목적을 달성하고 사람들이이를 즐길 수 있도록 하기 위해 ‘읽어야 할’ 콘텐츠를 아칸 예술에 부여한다. 따라서 예술 작품의 무형적 요소와 유형적 요소 사이에는 불가분의 연결 고리가 있으며 유형적 요소는 예술의 주제를 설명하는 역할을한다. 아칸 예술이 아칸 문화의 중요한 일환으로서 효과적으로 기능하도록 해주는 것은 바로 아칸 예술에 부여된 이러한 해석과 의미들이다. 일부의 상황에서 예술은 아칸의 세계관, 가치, 속담, 미학과 같은 아칸문화의 무형적 양상을 대표하는 코드화된 언어의 형태로서 기능한다. 따라서 아칸 예술은 무형과 유형의 두 가지 요소로 이루어진다. 아칸예술작품은 미학적 가치를 지닐 뿐만 아니라 그 작품들이 제작된 당시의 문화적, 역사적 증거를 함께 제공해준다. 이 작품들은 제작된 당시의 기술, 재료, 신념, 문화적 관행, 상황 뿐만 아니라 다른 문화와 민족들과의 관계까지도 보여준다. 이 작품들은 아칸을 연구하는 이들에게는 중요한 증거 자료이다. 이 작품들은 무형유산의 유형적 측면으로서읽어낼 수 있는 문서로서 자리하게 된다. 이 논문은 아칸 예술의 보이지 않는 부분과 물리적으로 보이는 부분 사이의 연결고리를 정립하고, 이 두 가지 상충적이면서 상호보완적인 요소들이 어떻게 이해되며 감상 될 수 있는 지에 대해서 보여주려고 한다.
Abstract
The intangible aspects of Akan art give it content that has to be ‘read’ in order for it to fulfil its purpose and be enjoyed. Hencethereisaninextricablelinkbetweenthe intangible and tangible parts of an artwork, with the tangible explaining the subject matter. It is the interpretation, and the meanings given to Akan art that makes it function effectively as an integral part of Akan culture. In some situations, art functions as a form of coded language representing the Akan world view, values, proverbs and aesthetics, in other words, the intangible aspects of their culture. Their art is thus made up of two components, the invisible and visible parts. Akan artworks are not only works of aesthetic value, they provide cultural and historical evidence of the time and period in which they weremade. Theyrevealthetechnology,materials,beliefs, cultural practices and the circumstances under which they were made as well as their relations with other cultures andpeoples. Theyareavalidsourceofevidenceforpeople studying the Akan. Their art has the status of legible documents, the tangible aspects of their intangible culture. This article seeks to establish the link between the unseen components of Akan art and its visible, physical components, and to show how these dual but complementary aspects can be understood and appreciated.
