Abstract
Purpose: This study investigated the longitudinal relations among positive affect, academic self-concept, and academic achievement focusing on middle school students. Design/methodology/data/approach: Structural equation modeling analysis was conducted using data from the Korea Longitudinal Study 2013 Panel Survey. Findings/Results: Firstly, higher levels of positive affect were significantly related to higher academic self-concept and lower academic achievement one year later. Secondly, higher academic self-concept was significantly related to higher positive affect and higher academic achievement one year later. Thirdly, higher academic achievement was significantly related to lower positive affect and higher academic self-concept one year later. Value: The findings of this study suggest that in order to enhance the positive effects on the other variables of positive affect, academic self-concept, and academic achievement, it may be beneficial to focus on improving academic self-concept.
