Abstract

This study aimed to examine the sequential mediating effects of hostile attribution bias and dysfunctional anger expression on the relationship between peer bullying experience—including both victimization and perpetration—and displaced aggression among early adolescents. A self-report survey was conducted with 304 first-grade middle school students in Korea, and data from 300 participants were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and SPSS Process Macro 4.2. The results were as follows: First, there was no statistically significant difference in displaced aggression by gender. Second, statistically significant correlations were found among peer bullying experiences, displaced aggression, hostile attribution bias, and dysfunctional anger expression. Finally, hostile attribution bias and dysfunctional anger expression demonstrated statistically significant sequential mediating effects on the relationship between peer bullying experiences and displaced aggression. These results suggest that early adolescents who experience peer bullying may develop hostile attribution tendencies, which can lead to dysfunctional anger expression and, ultimately, displaced aggression. Based on these findings, implications for counseling and psychological intervention targeting displaced aggression are discussed, along with study limitations and directions for future research.
