초록

This study discusses the need to preserve and protectthe value of material culture related to the rural livesof the villagers of the Wanju area in the south-easternpart of Korea. It starts with the following questions. Doesthe museum and cultural property protection policy inKorea actually protect cultural resources? What aboutthe marginalised cultures of rural villages and theirmaterial culture? Will they all disappear? And becausethese cultural resources are relatively modern, are weneglecting their safeguarding because they are not oldenough? In this article, I examine the current status andcharacteristics of material culture that have been foundthrough studies of residents living in the rural villagesof the Wanju area, and consider how they acquire valueas heritage. In particular, I seek to find a connectionbetween tangible and intangible cultural heritage throughlinks between various cultural resources. Fieldwork andinterviews with the villagers enable them to uncoverthe history of villages and their residents, and to curatetheir own experiences and settings, an important way tofacilitate an integrated approach to identifying materialculture in rural areas and rescuing these undervaluedcultural resources.
