Intangible forms of heritage are particularly vulnerable andsusceptible to change. While evolution is inevitable for a livingentity, at what point do we consider a tradition to have evolvedbeyond the parameters of that which made it distinctive? Thisarticle focuses on the Welsh tradition of the Mari Lwyd. Thisseasonal, animal head tradition is celebrated in Wales as aresistant, surviving legacy and is frequently described as acontinuance of an ‘ancient tradition’. However, the legitimacyof this claim is questionable. Instead, this paper proposes thatthe contemporary Mari Lwyd seen in Wales today, are uniqueentities, distinct from the historically recorded examples. Inmany respects, they should be treated as a new form of intangibleheritage, which have emerged only in the last few decades. Understanding how the historical variant of this tradition hasevolved into the distinct modern version is of critical importancein terms of understanding how ‘elements’ of intangible heritageare altered and manipulated beyond the confines of what firstmade them distinctive and considered to be of importance.
