Abstract

Relying upon recent criminological literature on social support theory, this study tested the hypotheses that areas with higher levels of local government's social support will have lower property crime rates and that the effects of poverty on property crime rates will be moderated by the levels of social support. Korea is an industrialized nation with moderate crime rates. We expect that local rates of property crime rates vary widely. Similarly, the level of social support provided by the local government varies throughout Korea due to the level of development and financial condition. Utilizing date from Korean police district regions(n=208) and controlling for other structural covariates, Ordinary Least Squares(OLS) regression was employed to estimate the effects of social support on regional property crime rates. On the opposite of author's expectation, the results do not provide the support for direct effects of social support on property crime. The findings showed that there was no significant relationship between social support and property crime rates. In addition, the results provide no support for conditional effects of social support on property crime. The findings are discussed in the social context of Korean regional specific conditions and of the meaning of these findings for recent research on social support and crime.
