Abstract
Relying upon recent criminological literature on institutional anomie theory, this study tested the hypotheses that areas with higher levels of noneconomic social institution's function will have lower homicide rates and that the effects of poverty on homicide rates will be moderated by the levels of noneconomic social institution's function. Korea is an industrialized nation with moderate homicide rates. However, local rates of homicide vary widely. Similarly, the level of noneconomic social institution functioning in the local area varies throughout Korea due to the level of social development and financial condition. Utilizing date from Korean regions(n=234) and controlling for other structural covariates, Ordinary Least Squares(OLS) regression was employed to estimate the effects of institutional anomie on regional homicide rates. Unexpectedly, the results did not provide the support for direct effects of noneconomic social institution on homicide. The findings did not show that regions exhibiting high level of social institution's function were regions with lower levels of homicide rates. In addition, the results provided no support for conditional effects of social institution on homicide. The findings are discussed in the social context of Korean regional specific conditions and of the meaning of these findings for recent research on institutional anomie theory and criminal behavior.
